Ahh who doesn’t hate a good spring clean? The house fairy usually does that right? Or so we think… The fact is spring cleaning although challenging and daunting most times can actually be done in a FUN way. That’s good news!! All you need is a good plan of attack and get the ball rolling. One step at a time and the job is done. It may take a weekend or longer. Go at you own pace and see the transformation.
How to do it right?
- Set the mood– Like with everything else in life, good music make it easier and lighter. Have your favourite playlist or music to keep you going. It keeps the rhythm, adds some sass and lightens the mood for the whole cleaning spree. Whether it’s your favourite radio station, CD or ask your friendly Google assistant for a perfect match, the choice is yours.
- Plan and prioritise your task: Having a good plan of attack usually helps. Start by checking one room at a time. You can start from the hardest room usually the kitchen (pantry, cupboards and shelves) or choose the easiest room to deal with and go from there. Start with picking up everything off the floor and put aside for sorting. Whether it be toys or clothes, these can be sorted for either giving away if no longer used or washing and putting away properly for re-use. Clearing up will create more open spaces for new things to fit in. This will take a bit of time.

Give away things you don’t need. Declutter your space is a way to lighten the mood of the room and giving you room to breathe.
- Divide and conquer! Lessen your load and involve the kids (if any) and get them to clear up their rooms, pick up toys and other items and sort them out. They can choose what they would like given away. Salvos is always a good place for those things that the kids have outgrown including toys.
Or get a friend to come over and help. Always a good time for a catch up! Include coffee/tea and good patisserie and you’ve got yourself a great catch up time filled with laughter and potential good advice to keep you on track!
- Stock your cleaning supplies: make sure you have all your duster, brushes, brooms, vacuum cleaner, mop, bucket and cleaning products ready for duty. White vinegar and baking soda come in handy for the bathroom taps descaling and grout areas to be clean. Antibacterial wipes for those door handles and other high touch areas. Sugar soap for those walls where the kids or family pets have made their mark!
The choice of supplies will all depend on how hard or easy the job is. The amount of scrubbing and elbow grease you are will to put in it will also determine that choice. Personally, I prefer bleaching the toilet and bathroom but white vinegar will do a similar job with longer soaking time.
Have some packing boxes for storing or giving away items as well. Always handy when it comes to decluttering the house. But don’t leave them sitting around too long or that’s another chore to attend to later on!
- Turn tasks into rewards: It can be an amazing motivator. It can be for yourself (a bit of pampering is always welcome!), a shopping day (more pampering!), ice cream treats or movie night with the family. After all the works done, you deserve a little rest and the family need some well deserved down time. When a task is achieved, pen down an activity that will benefit everyone who’s worked hard to reach the goal. This will also prepare them for the next challenge as they know a reward is coming. “No pain, no gain”, they say!
